The selected individual for this opportunity will collaborate closely with Dr. Richard Alorro at the WA School of Mines: Minerals, Energy and Chemical Engineering, located at Curtin University’s Perth Campus. The focal point of this PhD study involves the formulation of methodologies to effectively eliminate impurity metals from waste carbon materials, aimed at enhancing their utility in secondary battery applications. This project will be executed in partnership with an international collaborator.

Prospective candidates should possess a strong foundation in extractive metallurgy, encompassing areas such as hydrometallurgy, leaching and separation technologies, as well as pyrometallurgy. Additionally, familiarity with mineral processing, chemistry, chemical engineering, or materials engineering is advantageous. Individuals with educational backgrounds in Metallurgical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Applied Chemistry, Materials Science and Engineering, or related fields are particularly encouraged to apply.

Candidates with prior research experience, a record of publications, and proficiency in experimental design and statistical analysis will be favourably considered for this opportunity

Eligibility criteria

  • To be eligible, the applicants must meet all the given criteria:
  • Master’s degree or bachelor’s degree with first or upper-second-class honours in Materials Science and Engineering, or an equivalent discipline.
  • The candidate is expected to have a strong background in materials science and engineering. Background in mechanical testing and corrosion is also advantageous for this open position.

 Candidates should have:

  • Master and bachelor (First Class Honours) degree in Metallurgical Engineering/Chemical Engineering, or equivalent degree.
  • Language requirement (IELTS, Overall 6.5, Speaking, Writing, Reading and Listening 6.0 or TOEFL, Overall 79, Reading, 13, Listening 13, Speaking 18, Writing 21).

  • The successful candidate will receive a stipend of $28,854 per annum (tax-free), indexed annually.
  • The duration of the award shall be three years with a possible extension of up to six months (maximum), assessed on a case-by-case basis.

In addition, this scholarship will include a tuition fee waiver for a successful international candidate.
