What Documents Are Required when Applying for an Austrian Schengen Visa?

The following list of documents are required for any short-term Austrian Schengen visa application:

• Austrian visa application form. Fill it completely and with sincerity. Do not forget to sign it at the end after you print it.
• Two identical photos. The photos should be of passport format – a recent whole-face capture with a light background. See photograph requirements & specifications.
• Your passport/Travel document:
  • Valid for at least 3 months beyond your planned date of departure from Austria (the Schengen zone).
  • No older than 10 years.
  • And it should contain at least two blank pages.
• Copies of your previous Schengen visas (if applicable).

Austrian Visa Requirements Based on Your Employment Status

Additionally, you will need to provide the Austrian embassy/consulate with documents that prove you meet Austria visa requirements based on your employment status:

If employed:

• Employment contract.
• Current bank statement of the latest 6 months.
• Leave permission from the employer.
• Income Tax Return (ITR) form or Certificate of Income Tax deducted at the source of salary.

If self-employed:

• A copy of your business license.

Austrian Visa Requirements for Minors

Additional Austria visa requirements for minors wishing to visit Austria for short-stays are as follows:

• Birth certificate of the minor travelling to Austria.
• Austria application form signed by both parents.
• Family court order – in cases where only one parent has full custody of the child.
• Certified copies of ID/passport of both parents.
• A notarized parental authorization to travel to Austria, signed by both parents/guardians if the minor will be travelling alone.

*Note: When applying at the Austrian embassy/consulate in the home country, the guardian or parent should accompany their underage children.

Austria Visa Requirements Based on the Purpose of Entry to Austria

  • Bank account statement.
  • Sponsorship Letter. When another person will be financially sponsoring your trip to Austria. It is also often called an Affidavit of Support.

• Travel Itinerary. A detailed description of your trip to Austria, which includes:

• Proof of invitation. You will need to submit some extra documents to prove that you have been invited to visit Austria by a friend or a family member. These requirements are:
  • Invitation letter signed by the host.
  • Copy of host’s passport.
  • Host’s Residence Permit (if applicable).
  • Electronic Guarantee Letter (EVE). Your host in Austria should apply for an EVE at the local aliens police in their city of residence. The authority dealing with their EVE will forward the information to the Austrian Embassy in your country of residence within 48 hours. Your host will receive an ID number, which you should provide at the visa interview. Your host will be asked to provide the following documents/information to receive the EVE:
    • Their Passport or Personal ID Card.
    • Police Registration.
    • Recent bank Statement.
    • Last payslip.

    • Your (visa applicant) Passport number.

Required Documents for a Business Schengen Visa to Austria

When applying to obtain an Austrian Business visa, you must provide the following additional documents:

• Invitation letter from the Austrian company you will be visiting and their detailed address accompanied with the dates of your visit.
• A certificate from your employer. In this letter should be stated why you will be travelling to Austria.
• Business bank statement. Preferably for the last 6 months.

• An enrolment certificate allowing attendance of courses (school/university/language course / etc.), in Austria.

When applying to get an Austrian visa under the purpose of attending a Cultural / Sports / Religious Event in Austria you must provide the following additional documents:

• Event Information. As:
  • Invitation letter from the relevant body in Austria with details upon the nature of events or activities that are to be held in Austria.
  • Entry tickets to the event.
  • Enrolment conditions.
  • Detailed program of the event in Austria.

• Proof of Austrian citizenship (ID card or consular card or certification of Austrian nationality or naturalization order).

1. Find out where you need to apply for a visa to Austria.
2. Choose the right Austrian visa type. Based on the purpose of your travel to Austria, choose the right visa type to apply for.

Who Can Apply for a Schengen Visa at the Austrian Embassy/Consulate/VAC?

Since Austria is part of the visa-free travel area of Schengen, where you need to apply for a short-stay visa depends on a few factors.

You will need to apply at the Austrian embassy/consulate/VAC in your country of residence if:

• Austria is the only country you will be visiting
• You will visit more Schengen states, but Austria is your main destination, which means:
  • You will be spending more days in Austria, than in the other countries
  • You will be spending an equal amount of days in each country, but you will enter the Schengen Zone through Austria

Please keep in mind that to be eligible to apply for an Austrian short stay visa you must be:

• A citizen of the country from where you are applying
• A foreign citizen currently on a temporary residence permit in the country from where you are applying

You cannot apply for a short-stay Austrian visa from a country in which you are currently on a visa.

How Long Does It Take to Get an Austrian Visa?

The processing time for an Austrian Schengen visa may take up to 15 days, in a normal situation. In some cases, this period may be extended up to 30 due to the number of applications the embassy/consulate of Austria is receiving, or the uniqueness of your case.

Still, exceptional applications may take up to 60 days to be processed by the Austrian embassy/consulate. That is why you are highly recommended to apply for your Austrian short-stay visa as soon as you can, but no earlier than three months prior to your trip to Austria.

How Much Does It Cost to Apply for an Austrian Visa?

Depending on your age, nationality, and some other factors you could be exempt from paying the Austria visa fee, or at least you will have to pay a lower fee.

How Long Can We Stay in Austria Without a Visa?

If you are the national of a visa-exempt country, you will be permitted to remain in Austria for up to 90 days, within a 180 day period. The day you step into Austria is counted as day one, and the day you leave is counted as the last day. Remember that the time you spend in other countries within the Schengen Area is also counted in this period.

Please make sure you understand the 90/180 Schengen Visa Rule. Do not violate this rule, not even for one day, since you may face consequences for overstaying in the Schengen territory.

On the other hand, if you are the national of a country that still has not reached a visa-free agreement with Austria and the other Schengen members, you will not be allowed to enter Austria without a visa, at all.

Do US Citizens Need a Visa to Visit Austria?

U.S. Citizens don’t need to obtain an Austrian visa when travelling to Austria for up to 90 days for tourism and business purposes. However, US nationals are required to hold a US passport, which should be valid for at least 3 months beyond the period of their stay in Austria.

Can I Extend My Schengen Visa in Austria?

Yes, you can extend your Austrian Schengen visa, but only in exceptional cases where new facts and special reasons arise after entry into Austria.

Can My Austrian Schengen Visa Be Revoked?

Yes, your Austria visa can be revoked, by the competent Austrian authorities. The annulment of an Austrian visa happens when it becomes evident that the conditions for issuing the visa are no longer met.

Failure of the visa holder to provide the border officer, with the entry requirements, may also lead to a decision to annul or revoke the visa, though not automatically.
