Surrey University PhD Scholarships in New tools for sustainable control of liver fluke in ruminants

The University of Surrey is offering PhD Scholarships in New Tools for
Sustainable Control of Liver Fluke in Ruminants to support students in
their education. This PhD project is focused on utilizing genomic data
from liver fluke to create a comprehensive set of new genetic markers
for this parasite.

These scholarships are primarily available to students who have established residency in the UK. While international students, including those from EU countries, are eligible to apply, it’s important to note that no more than 30% of the available projects can be awarded to international students.

The scholarship includes a tax-free stipend and covers tuition fees at the standard UK rate. In the 2021/2022 academic year, this amounted to a minimum of £15,609 per year for stipend and £4,500 per year for tuition fees. Additionally, there will be a contribution provided towards research expenses.

Eligibility criteria

This project is suitable for candidates holding a veterinary degree or a degree in biological sciences, as well as those with a background in quantitative disciplines such as mathematics, physics, or engineering. A demonstrated interest in the subject, possibly through previous work with parasites or related pathogens, would be advantageous. Some prior experience in molecular laboratory settings, gained through undergraduate projects or internships, would be beneficial. Given that the project involves genomic analysis and modeling components, having proven abilities in these areas and a keen interest in utilizing these approaches would be advantageous.

This scholarship opportunity is open to both UK and international students.

IELTS requirements: The standard criterion is a score of 6.5 or higher (or its equivalent) with a minimum score of 6.0 in each individual category, achieved in an IELTS Academic test taken within the past two years.

Value

The University of Surrey will include a tax-free stipend and support for tuition fees at the standard UK rate (in 2021/2022, a minimum of £15,609 per year and £4500 per year, respectively). There will also be a contribution towards research costs.

Application process

To avail of this scholarship opportunity, applicants are advised to first secure admission to the PhD program at the university. The application should be submitted online through the FoodBioSystems online application system.

  • Required Documents: Applicants should provide scanned copies of their signed/stamped qualifications along with official English translations (certificates and transcripts) to demonstrate how they meet or expect to meet the entry prerequisites. Additionally, A copy of the passport is required for those who need a visa to study in the UK. If requested, a personal statement and a research proposal should also be included.
